GC vs. South Tonight

Does anyone know the start time of the first game and how many games are played tonight?

Hauldren powers South over Gate City

GATE CITY - Beau knows basketball and he had the right zip code Saturday night.

Catching, whirling and shooting underneath, 6-foot-3 senior Beau Hauldren tossed in 21 of his 23 points in the first three quarters as Sullivan South again defeated Gate City 59-33.

The Blue Devils chose their poison. Two weeks ago it was 6-9, 245-pound Levi Ashworth who hit 18 points with a 7-for-11 field goal performance in a South victory over Gate City.

This time Ashworth found himself inside a circle of defenders and was relatively quiet, settling for six points.

Hauldren, who got 10 points in the earlier game, blazed in 10 of 12 field goal attempts and went 3-for-4 on the foul line.

"Beau had a good game,'' South coach Mark Pendleton said. "He is a force in there and has been for three years. He is a hard worker.''

Gate City coach Scott Vermillion agreed.

"Hauldren is tough,'' he said.

Hauldren explained the difference in this game and the teams' first meeting.

"Tonight, the defenders were playing behind me,'' he said. "If I wasn't open after taking a pass at low post, I'd pass the ball out. When it came back to me, I had room to shoot. Over there, we played them over the top.

"Our coaches preached all week about getting the ball down low. We did a lot of this early in the season but sort of got away from it. We're going back to it.''

Hauldren left the game with 3:22 remaining and South ahead 58-31.

South committed very few turnovers and had one of its most efficient games offensively.

The Rebels' defense was equally effective. They clogged the lanes to shut off Gate City's penetration and seldom allowed the visitors a second shot.

"Turnovers have bothered us all season,'' Pendleton noted. "We have limited our mistakes in January and it's paid off a little. We've taken better care of the ball. It's just been a matter of slowing ourselves down.''

South faces a rigid test this week. The Rebels play Tuesday at Science Hill and Friday at Sullivan Central against the Big 9 Conference teams with the fewest losses.

"I guess we'll see what we're made of,'' Pendleton said.

South's overwhelming advantage in height created some mismatches against Gate City.

Hauldren was the only South player to reach double figures. Likewise, Josh Kilgore with 11 points was the lone Blue Devil in double digits.

"We played hard,'' Vermillion said. "We just didn't play intelligently. It got away from us. We weren't sharp.

"We're a learning team in terms of experience. We have a lot of seniors who haven't played much. South has a veteran ballclub.''

South's girls beat Gate City 56-48 for the second time in three games.

Samantha Williams and Bridgette Coates each scored 13 points and Coleen Barnett got 11 for South.

Heather Odle and Tuesdee Woods each hit 12 and Brittany Rogers scored 11 for Gate City.

There were 50 personal fouls called - 28 against South. Remarkably, Gate City's Woods was the only player to foul out of the game. She finally exited with 38 seconds remaining.

Six Lady Rebels had their playing time limited because of four fouls charged against them.

"Our girls did a pretty good job just staying in the game,'' South coach Josh Tate said. "The reserves were outstanding.

"Last night, we didn't have the energy. Tonight, we did. Ashley Hood took control late in the game and finished it with free throws.''

Gate City seemed to be rolling in the first quarter, building a 16-10 lead.

"They were having a field day on back-door cuts,'' Tate said. "We then took away the denials on the wings and watched the basket more closely.''

The Lady Blue Devils went more than 13 minutes without a field goal.

South pulled out of a halftime tie and led by 10 early in the fourth quarter.

Gate City missed 16 free throws, clearly the margin of defeat.

"We got some good looks at the basket but didn't finish,'' Gate City coach Hugh Godsey said. "It was a lack of execution. South played pretty well.''

Got taken to the woodshed. But with a 6-9 post with Hauldren giving plenty of help it's hard just to snag a rebound. Plus they can extend their D because they know there aren't going to be many times you can go down low.
